Looking for Work and more about food

On Tuesday we had two interviews for teaching jobs.  We were very nervous but they went well.  The first one we had was a telephone interview.  The job is for teaching children 10 minutes at a time on the phone.  We had a second interview for that last night with an actual child.  It was fun.  We are hired starting at the end of April.  It will be one day a week for a little over an hour.  It will be good experience that we can add to our resume.  The other interview was for jobs that occasionally come up for anywhere from one day to a week at a time.  In both interviews it was mentioned that they will be looking for permanent teachers in September so maybe that is when we can expect some regular work.

More about food.  We ate donkey meat the other day!  I really didn't want to but we mentioned we were hungry to a chinese friend and she took us to a sandwich place that only sold donkey.  She said she thought it was a "very delicious" kind of food.  I said "Can I have one with no meat?"  They chuckled and said no.  I closed my eyes and took a bite.  It tasted like roast beef.  So, I guess I eat donkey meat now.  I also am addicted to lays "Numb and Spicy Hot Pot" flavored potato chips and hawthorne fruit candy.  Yum.  I can't seem to get enough.  We finally found the coffee district and bought some more coffee and a coffee grinder.  Coffee beans are not cheap, especially if they are imported.  So, we bought chinese coffee beans.  I think that we had chinese coffee at a friends house and we liked it.  We haven't tried the stuff we bought yet.

About the pollution and weather.  Yesterday was a great day temperature-wise but not so great pollution-wise.  I stepped out of our apartment, started walking, and felt a stinging sensation in my nose.  It was that sensation you get right before you sneeze but more pungent.  I wish I could have sneezed.  Instead I felt the stinging a minute or two more.  After that it seemed to go away.  Perhaps it was my nose's initial reaction to the air and then it adjusted.  All I can say is that it was unpleasant but brief. I have not had to run for a bus in the haze so I'm not sure what effect it will have on me yet asthma-wise.

The land of pork

Lately I've been feeling like I'm living in the land of pork.  Everywhere I go I see yummy things to eat but when I ask what kind of meat it has the reply is always "Zhu rou" (pork).  That is one word I remembered from the first time I heard it.  It sounds like "jew row".  I think to myself: Jews don't eat pig so if they were in a boat they would row away.  Silly I know but I really don't like to eat pork so I had to remember that word fast.  Now, when I heard that word I ask if they have chicken or beef or no meat at all.  Many times they only have the pork but on occasion they may have another meat.  Sometimes they even have vegetarian but it will still have some egg in it.  The thing is, the stuff with the pork in it always looks tastier than what I'm eating!  Sam will say his meal is delicious while mine is just okay.  Blagh!  One day I may have some of this Zhu rou but for now I'm just feeling adventurous with the lamb and squid.

Sam and I have noticed that we have been getting scared over the silliest things.  For example, we have a water service that will deliver a new 5 gallon bottle for a machine that dispenses both hot and room temperature water.  We have already paid for 11 bottles so they gave us 11 tickets.  We are supposed to call the number on the ticket and request a bottle when we need it.  The first time we needed water a friend made the call for us, but a few days ago we ran out again.  Sam said he agonized over calling for quite a while.  He looked at the ticket and saw three different phone numbers to call.  He had no clue which was the one for delivery.  He tried one but it was more of a recording.  The next one he thought was right so he gave our apt number and asked for water.  The woman on the other line said a bunch of words he didn't understand so he just said "Hao.  Xie, xie."  (Okay, thanks)  Then he hung up and hoped that somehow water would appear at our door.  Miraculously about 30 minutes later there was a knock at the door and we had water!  We agonized similarly over buying more electricity.  Here, you have to prepay for your electricity.  There is a meter outside your apt. door which tells you how many units you have left.  When we first got here they told us we had about a week of electricity left.  To buy more electricity you must load a card that is specific to your apartment.  You must go to a bank to add money on it.  That may sound easy, but if felt daunting to walk into a bank and explain what you want.  A friend said they would help but by the time they were ready it was after 6pm on a Friday night and no banks were open.  That same night we decided to ask our landlord for advice. She said there was a building close by that was one of the main places to buy electricity.  She gave directions to Sam but again it wouldn't be open until Monday.  We had got seriously low on power and I felt like any minute everything might stop working.  That weekend was scary but we made it!  So, on Monday Sam tried to find this electricity building but with no success.  He walked far down the street she said it was on but to no avail.  He finally decided to walk into a bank and see what would happen.  Surprisingly enough he got through it with only two bank employees needed to help.  He loaded as much $ as he could so that we won't have to do it again for a while.  Really these are simple things but they feel huge when you are not sure of what the person standing front of you is saying.

To answer a couple of comments on the blog.  Our living room may look big but its probably only slightly bigger than our apartment in West Sac.  The bed you saw is a new one.  Originally we had a twin bed that was as hard as a rock.  Although our apartment is supposed to be "furnished", our landlord would not buy us a bigger bed. We had to buy our own.  It worked out good because we were able to choose not only a bed we liked the look of, but also comfortable.  I think that is important because getting sick happens a lot here.  If you must be in bed its good if its comfy.

A few pictures?

The first picture is a view from our apartment.  Two more are of our living room.  The room with the orange wall is our bedroom.  I plan to paint that as soon as I can.

No pictures yet

I'm trying to post some pictures but for some reason I can't.  Perhaps the file is too big.  I'll keep trying.  Maybe next time.

The most recent highlight is that we found the really big grocery store by our house.  It's three stories and quite a bit cheaper than the previous store we had been going to.  We stocked up on goodies and comfort food.  Hot chocolate, popcorn, orion pies, and lime flavored potato chips.  Mmm.  The flavors of chips here are strange but good.  The other day we got cucumber flavor and I'm thinking next time I'll try the steak flavored.  We also bought some instant coffee but its really weak.  We had brought a pound of komodo dragon coffee from starbucks back home but it wasn't ground.  So today my mission was to find a coffee place or coffee grinder and get my coffee beans ground.  I had heard of a starbucks just one stop away on the subway so I thought I would try there first.  However, I had a foreign friend with me and she said she had heard of a whole coffee district. We set out to find it.  While riding the subway I noticed how popular we had become.  Men stood up and gave us their seats and others craned their necks to listen to our conversation.  I had no idea two giggling white girls was so interesting.  It took about 30 minutes or so to get to where we thought it was but we couldn't find it.  Then my friend had to leave to go to work.  So I headed back to my part of town with a bag of full bean coffee.  I knew it wouldn't do if I came home and Sam couldn't make himself a cup of strong coffee.  Now I'm proud to say I found the starbucks all by myself!  They looked at me a little weird but they ground the beans.  I also bought a cup of regular brewed coffee.  It cost 15rmb which equals about $2.25.  Ouch!  I like the McDonalds coffee.  Its only 6rmb.  That's a little under a dollar.  Totally worth that!  To be fair, the starbucks coffee was pretty good and they had all the usual condiments you could add to it.  So a dash of vanilla, little bit of cream and it was just to my liking.  To all of you back home with starbucks gold cards.....go have a latte and think of me.

From hot to cold

Although the temperature here has been hovering in the 50s and a jacket is necessary for outside, inside had been a different story.  It was hot inside, practically anywhere you went but especially our own apartment.  You see, there is a radiator in every room that we have no control over.  It just got hotter and hotter.  We opened windows but that lets in a lot of dirt.  Our landlords suggested turning on the air conditioner but we decided just to bear with it.  I wondered why I hadn't brought more cool pajama pants and less leggings.  Sam on the other hand, brought all the pajama pants/shorts he owned. (I have no idea why.)  But all that changed about a day or two ago.  On March 15 they turned those radiators off and now we have hit the other end of the spectrum.  Now, I'm cold everywhere!  Before, when we were so hot, I didn't bother to buy blankets. Now I'm adding that as an asap item to my shopping list.  Hopefully today we will be purchasing the last of some much needed household items.

People keep asking Sam and I : "Xiguan le ma?"  I thought: huh?  Then I looked it up.  It means: are you use to things, have you got into the habit, or are settled? The answer is, no.  At least, not yet.  We are working on it.  Being sick definitely puts a damper on getting things set up.  Of course Sam is doing a lot more than me lately.  When I was really sick he would go grocery shopping and get food for me.  He even brought me mashed potatoes from KFC.  (Not quite the same but close enough.)  One day he brought me some food in bed then walked out of the room.  When he walked back in, he started talking about something that happened but I said :"Why are you wearing bright pink lipstick?"  He replied: "No, its lip balm.  I bought it at the market."  I busted up laughing and told him to go look in a mirror.  He had the brightest pinkest lips.  I laughed so hard I cried.  And I got to keep the "lip balm" too!

Hello again

Hello to anyone who was waiting for me to finally get this blog going again. :)  It took a couple of days just to get internet.  When we finally did get it I couldn't figure out how to post.  I hope this works now.  So, here is what has happened....Not much really.  Just sickness and cleaning.  Our apartment is actually pretty good.  We have hot water in the kitchen.  (That's a big deal here.)  My only real complaint is how dirty it is.  I've been cleaning intermittently but being sick doesn't help.  I think I must have got sick the moment I stepped off the plane because that is how fast it took for me to start feeling bad.  When I saw the condition of our apartment and how much stuff we needed (towels, dishes, mop, etc) I couldn't take the rest I needed.  So for two days I pushed myself beyond what was reasonable and Thursday night everything got worse.  I had a fever for two days and lets just say not much of my food was..... digested properly.  On Saturday and Sunday it was all I could do to get out of bed and walk to the other side of the apartment.  Sam wasn't so bad.  He had the cold but not the other stuff.  He was able to unpack and wash the dishes we had bought.  He even swept and vacuumed!  The worst part about being sick in a foreign land is that you are in a foreign land!  Nothing is homey or comfortable.  I hear you get sick a lot the first couple of years here. (ack)  Not really comforting but I'm taking my vitamins and trying to get more sleep.  Some new friends heard I was sick and are coming by to visit me today.  That should be encouraging.  I've been feeling cooped up.  On the bright side, Sam got his Wii working so we wont' be bored. :)

Last night in the USA

Did I get forget anything??  That question is what will wake me up over and over tonight.  Some good friends of ours moved to another state last September.  They recently came back for a visit.  One of them told me they breathed a big sigh of relief once they got on the airplane.  That was because there was nothing more they could do to prepare.  If they had forgot something, well, it was too late now.  I'm looking forward to that sigh......

A few more days to go.....

Just a few more days to go and we'll be on the other side of the globe.  It feels surreal.  It feels like its not really going to happen.

I'm starting this blog to keep anyone who cares updated on our trials, tribulations, and hopefully accomplishments in a foreign land.

So far here is what has transpired:  We have sold or given away most of our worldly possessions.  We are currently living with my parents and driving Sam's dad's car.  Yesterday we went to the Chinese consulate for the last time and picked up some vital paperwork.  Then we took Sam's sisters to China town to look for chinese attire for our going away party on Saturday.  San Francisco China Town actually does smell somewhat like China.  The thing that definitely stands out as different is that everyone seems to speak mainly Cantonese and most of the writing is in traditional chinese characters.  The shop owners also don't like to bargain that much on things.  They would come down a little in price if the price was already set very high or if you bought more than one item.  I went around saying "do you know how much cheaper you could get that if you were in China!"  I guess we'll be there soon enough for me to sharpen my bargaining skills.....
